Former American Idol contestant David Archuleta publicly shared his sexuality on June 12, 2021, revealing he was part of the LGBTQ community in a lengthy and emotional Instagram post.
He revealed he came out as gay to his family in 2014 but later realized he had feelings for both men and women, keeping himself on the bisexual spectrum. He added he did not “have too much sexual [desire] as most people,” as he was saving himself for marriage.
As someone who struggled to accept himself as gay, he asked others to be more understanding of people’s coming out journeys and accept their identity.
“I just invite you to please consider making room to be more understanding and compassionate to those who are LGBTQIA+, and those who are a part of that community and trying to find that balance with their faith,” the singer wrote. He also mentioned embracing his identity had given him peace.
David Archuleta Tried Suppressing His Sexuality
On June 11, 2022, Archuleta celebrated his first anniversary of coming out with a lengthy message, reflecting on his life before and after the announcement.

As per his accounts, the 31-year-old was initially afraid of his sexuality, but after coming out, he felt at peace, even if that meant having a boyfriend.
He added he did not plan his coming out for Pride Month in 2021, but it happened naturally. “It was just the natural flow of events the days prior coming to terms with myself and deciding to say it out loud after ending an engagement I had to a great and understanding girl just a couple weeks before.”
Archuleta revealed that his former fiancée was one of the three he came close to marrying. He thought pursuing romantic relations with the women would help him forget his inner turmoil.
But when a friend of his told him a story about how much anger and hatred her spouse had from hiding his sexuality, he realized he was in the wrong.
The singer explained he had not been honest with the girls he dated and did not have enough feelings for them and apologized to all the women if he ever had made them feel insufficient.
Qualities David Archuleta Looked for In a Wife
Before Archuleta had come out as gay to the public, he took part in a Facebook event in 2014 where he answered questions from fans.
One of them asked him what he looked for in a wife, after which Archuleta listed some qualities he looked for.
“Obviously, I don’t know if it’s cheesy, but I think someone needs to love the Lord. It’s a given; they need to love the Lord more than they love me. Then they’ll have their priorities set. And if they do that, then we can make the same kinds of goals together in our family,” said the singer.
He also looked for someone fun and confident, who carried themselves well and could make him laugh. His future wife did not have to be a singer as long as she supported his career as a musician.
