Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins, representing District 8 of Miami-Dade County, is described by her staff as a fierce, determined detail-oriented and precise leader. “Her determination and how detail-oriented sets the tone for our entire office,” said her chief of staff, Jevè Clayton. “Everything that she does is always well prepared. You have to come to the commissioner with ABC and D, [and explain] why is it this, why is it that, because that’s what our residents deserve.”
Although no one in her family or friends was involved in politics, Ms. Cohen Higgins decided to serve her community and use her voice politically after serving in local organizations. “I am one of many women of color in this country that felt jolted into action as a result of some of the very, very offensive remarks that came from our former president, where I said to myself, I am doing as much for my community as I know how to do serving on boards. But I need to start looking at using my voice politically, to try to add and lift up some of the messaging as it pertains to women and women of color,” she said. “That was really the spark that motivated me to pivot away from serving on boards and into looking into politics.”
Since joining the commission in 2020 to fill the vacancy of the recently elected Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, Ms. Cohen Higgins has passed legislation addressing the environment, housing, small businesses and cryptocurrency, among others.
For her upcoming four-year term, she is prioritizing safety, the economy, the environment and transportation.
Danielle Cohen Higgins spoke with Miami Today reporter Gabriela Henriquez Stoikow.
